KOWLOON CANTON RAILWAY

BRITISH SECTION.

Estimates.

We have now had an opportunity of considering the

revised estimates of the sest of the above Railway which have

boon compiled by the Chief Resident Engineer based upon the

experience of the prices of materials and labour which he has

gained.

Mr. Bruee's estimate of the sost of construction

given in his report to H.E. the Governor dated October 20th

1905, amounted to $4,470,500, and the estimate by the Honourable

the Direster of Publie Works for the reclamation of Kowloon

Station Yard was $585,000. The sum of these twe estimates

amounting to $5,055,500, represents the preliminary estimate

which has to be compared with the estimates new submitted by

the Chief Resident Engineer. Those estimates, exclusive of

Workshops, Kowloon Station Buildings, Private Sidings er Deep

Sea Wall, amount to $8,050,000.00, representing a difference

from the preliminary estimates of $2,994,500.00.

This is a

very serious inerease in the estimated cost, and we find that
